The City of Bergstadt
The City of Bergstadt
Basics
- One of the Free Cities of the Landermensch, the Berg prized its independence from the great nobles families that dominated its neighbors. Located within the high peaks of the Stadtenal Mountains, the above ground elements of the city have been reduced to ruins following the War of the Emerald Throne. Old tales speak of survivors still living in its underground vaults and mines.
History
- The City of Bergstadt had wanted no part in the War of the Emerald Throne in 1020 O.M.. Located between the Great Canopy and the Landermensch, its rulers knew that siding with any of the claimants would mean that it become the center of the conflict. Considered impregnable before the war began, the city maintained its neutrality for the first twenty years.
- Then the Society of Magic joined the fray and threatened to burn it to ground unless it backed Prince Folen for the throne. Bergstadt refused and so it burned in The Great Fire of 1040. The people had retreated to the Mines of Berg intending to weather what must be the last year of the war there.
- Thirty years have passed and the Mines have become the real Bergstadt in name and in fact. 20,000 humans, dwarves, gnomes, and elves live in relative tranquility cut off from the world but content.
- Last spring the Reservoir did not fill all the way.
- This spring (Planting 1070 O.M.]) the Reservoir has only enough water for the citizens. Calling upon their patron god, Tiefer, Mayor West Adam has drawn lots - your lots - to venture forth.
